Train Crash

A 6-year-old girl in southern Spain is being called a miracle after she became the sole survivor from her family in a devastating train collision that killed dozens and left the nation in mourning.

The crash happened this week when two trains collided on parallel tracks, sending cars off the rails and down a steep slope. Witnesses described a deafening roar as metal twisted, windows shattered, and cars were crushed. When the wreck finally settled, silence was broken only by cries of the injured.

Amid the chaos, one small child somehow managed to escape.

According to Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia, a Civil Guard officer discovered the little girl “barefoot on the tracks” after she crawled out of a broken train window. She had been traveling with her parents, brother, and cousin in one of the first carriages — the area of the train that took the brunt of the impact.

Tragically, all four of her family members were killed, leaving her orphaned.

Officials later confirmed the family’s last name as Zamorano Álvarez, though the child’s first name has not been released to the public.

Despite being surrounded by destruction, the girl suffered remarkably minor physical injuries. A relative told reporters that she was “in good health” and only needed “three stitches on her head” at a nearby hospital.

For many in her hometown of Punta Umbria, her survival feels nothing short of a miracle.

“There are many people who are very sad for the victims of this terrible accident, but there were also many who survived, like the miracle of the girl who is safe,” Mayor José Carlos Hernández told reporters. He later led a minute of silence for the victims and declared three days of mourning for the village.

Authorities say at least 42 people have been confirmed dead, though the toll could rise as crews continue to search the wreckage. More than 400 passengers had been aboard both trains, and over 120 people were injured.

The girl has now been placed under the care of her grandparents in a hotel in the nearby city of Cordoba. Mayor Hernández said the family is determined to rally around her, telling reporters, “She has a tremendous family who will do what it takes for her to have a happy life.”

As Spain grieves the victims and waits for answers about what caused the collision, the story of one barefoot child walking away from the wreckage is offering a small but powerful glimpse of hope through heartbreak — a reminder that even in the midst of tragedy, miracles still happen.
