A quiet, affluent Florida neighborhood has been left stunned after authorities say a mother killed her two children inside their home before taking her own life in what investigators are calling a double homicide-suicide.
Deputies with the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office discovered the tragic scene after responding to a welfare check request at a home in the gated Lake Club community in Lakewood Ranch on Feb. 26. The check had been requested by the children’s father, who was on a business trip in South America and had grown concerned after being unable to reach his family.
When deputies arrived at the residence, officials said they noticed suspicious circumstances that required them to enter the home. What they encountered inside was devastating.
“Deputies observed circumstances that required them to make entry into the residence,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. Once inside, deputies “encountered a violent crime scene.”
Authorities later identified the victims as Monika Rubacha, 44, and her two children, Josh James, 14, and Emma James, 11. According to investigators, the children were found dead in their bedrooms. Rubacha was also found deceased inside the home.
Following an initial investigation, detectives concluded that the children were killed by their mother before she took her own life. The sheriff’s office described the incident as “a double homicide followed by a suicide.”
Officials said all three suffered “traumatic injuries,” though the medical examiner will determine the official cause and manner of death.
Public Information Officer Randy Warren described the scene as deeply disturbing for both deputies and the family.
“This is a horrible, horrible thing for the deputy staff to witness [and] even worse for this father and the husband, who was on his way back from South America,” Warren said during a press conference. “He flew in this morning, had to be notified of what happened here. It's an incredibly emotional day for him. It's not a good scene at all.”
Investigators believe there may have been some level of planning involved. According to Warren, preliminary findings suggest the teenage son may have died earlier than his sister and mother as authorities work to determine the exact timeline.
Authorities also noted that there had been no previous incidents reported at the home since the family moved to Florida from Missouri about three years ago.
“There’s really nothing there that would have indicated this would have happened,” Warren said.
News of the tragedy has shaken residents in the exclusive Lake Club community, which is known for its quiet, family-oriented atmosphere.
“It’s a total surprise and shock. This neighborhood is so quiet,” resident Paul Henne told FOX 13. “It’s a family community with small kids. It really hits you hard when you hear about that stuff happening.”
The Lake Club at Lakewood Ranch also released a statement acknowledging the tragedy and expressing sympathy for those affected.
“Our hearts are with the family and all those affected during this incredibly difficult time,” the community said.
Authorities emphasize that there is no evidence anyone else was involved and no threat to the public. The investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue reviewing evidence to better understand what led to the heartbreaking loss of life.
