When you’re dating someone new, it doesn’t take much to spark a little jealousy — especially if your partner happens to be a famous heartthrob. Just ask Amy Earnhardt, who recently looked back on the moment she jokingly “marked her territory” after learning that pop star Jessica Simpson once fantasized about marrying her now-husband, NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Amy shared the story on her "Bless Your ‘Hardt" podcast, recalling the early days of her relationship with Dale Jr. in the late 2000s. At the time, the couple had only just started dating, and Amy was still getting used to life around the racetrack — and the attention that came with being linked to one of NASCAR’s biggest stars.

During one race weekend in Daytona around 2008 or 2009, Amy heard that Simpson — then at the height of her pop fame — was also at the track. As a fellow Texan and someone she’d admired, Amy was thrilled at the thought of meeting her.

“I’m like, ‘Hey, Dale, do you think that you could get Jessica Simpson to come to the bus so I could meet her?’” Amy recalled. But Dale Jr. didn’t share her enthusiasm. “He’s like, ‘I don’t think that’d be a really good idea.’ And I was like, ‘Why not?’”

That’s when he showed her a clip from an interview Simpson had given earlier that day. In it, the singer joked that she’d had a dream she and Dale Jr. got married — in a treehouse, no less.

For Amy, that was enough to flip the script instantly. “And I’m like, ‘Yeah… don’t bring that b---- over here. It’s a good idea,’” she said, laughing at the memory while Dale Jr. cracked up beside her.

Looking back, Amy framed the moment with humor, but also admitted it left a lasting impression. “I haven’t bought a Jessica Simpson shoe or a bag — you know, how she’s got all the things — ever since then,” she joked. “I was like, she was f---ing trying to fish my man … Yes, she was. She knew exactly what she was doing.”

While Amy’s comments were clearly tongue-in-cheek, the story taps into something many couples recognize: the early-relationship instinct to protect what feels precious and new. When you’re still building trust and security, even playful outside attention can feel threatening — especially in the high-profile world of celebrities.

Of course, the triangle that never was quickly faded into the past. Simpson went on to meet former NFL player Eric Johnson in 2010, and the two married in 2014, later welcoming three children together. Dale Jr. and Amy eventually tied the knot in 2016 and now share two daughters, Isla and Nicole.

Today, Amy and Dale Jr. often present themselves as a playful, grounded couple who don’t take themselves too seriously — something Amy’s story reflects. Underneath the jokes and rivalry banter is a relationship that has clearly stood the test of time.

And that’s the real takeaway for anyone navigating dating jitters or jealousy: moments of insecurity can pop up in even the happiest relationships. What matters most is how couples move through them — with honesty, humor, and the growing confidence that comes from commitment.

In Amy’s case, the woman she once teased about “fishing” for her man never actually posed a threat. But the memory still makes for a relatable reminder that love — famous or not — often comes with a little territory-marking along the way.
