Isidro Zarate was waiting for his wife in the San Antonio Wal-Mart parking lot on Black Friday when he noticed a fight breaking out. A man started beating on a woman and Zarate drove up to intervene. According to police, Zarate told the man, "Take your hands off her!" At that point, the man reached for his gun and started shooting.

Zarate was struck in the neck and died in the parking lot.

Lisa Benavides, his wife, was still inside shopping. What was supposed to be a quick Wal-Mart run turned into a nightmare when she exited the store to see the parking lot surrounded with police and yellow tape. She asked a bystander what had happened and was told someone had been shot.

To her horror, she realized her husband was the one who had been shot and killed. What began as a normal day turned into a tragic one. All because Zarate had a kind, pure heart and wanted to help someone in need.

Benavides wasn't surprised her husband's last act was to try and spread kindness. She described him as a man who was kind to everyone he met. He taught his children to be nice to everyone and led by example.

Zarate's life came to a tragic end through a simple act of kindness, but his example is one many of us should try to emulate. Isidro Zarate showed immense kindness to reach out and try to stop the fight and help the woman. He couldn't have known that act would lead to his death.

I still can't believe that my husband is gone I'm so lost without him here with me. Everybody is telling me to be strong but I can't right now he was my other half I just don't know what to do

Sometimes the smallest and greatest of actions can lead to an untimely end. There's no knowing what the outcome will be, but if we go through life with a kind, positive attitude, the world will be all the better for it. Imagine what kind of a world we would have if people treated others with respect and kindness.

What matters most in life is to be kind to all you meet. To do your best to help others in need in any way you can. It doesn't matter the season or the time of day, if you face the day with a positive attitude, you can change a life. There's no knowing exactly what will come from your kindness, but a kind thought goes a long way.

Isidro Zarate was just one person trying to make the world a better place.

Change starts with one person, like Isidro. It starts with you.

A GoFundMe account in Isidro's name has been set up to cover funeral expenses.
