Typically, guys don't dig sappy movies. The stereotypical "guy" film normally involves crazy car chase scenes and bulky action heroes, minus a tear-jerking love story, but sometimes, particularly in marriage, conceding to his wife's weekend movie choice can work in the husband's favor. Why?

  • To show how open-minded he is.

  • To reveal the tender side behind his tough-guy exterior.

  • To demonstrate respect for his wife's opinions and choices.

Just as long as it doesn't involve Hugh Grant, men donning tights, or singing, my husband can be a pretty good sport when it comes to indulging my taste in movies.

Jane Austen? Don't worry honey, I won't even go there.

So without further ado, here are my top five chick flicks that I believe married men can, in fact, survive. (Check my husband's pulse if you don't believe me.)

1. "The Vow"

- Rachel McAdams is so cute, and Channing Tatum's commitment to his marriage is enough to make a girl's heart swoon in this romantic 2012 flick. For the guys: a violent car accident ups the "action" factor.

2. "Twilight"

- Now before you roll your eyes, keep in mind four things: vampires, werewolves, cool cars and goofy vampire make-up. Pure entertainment! This 2008 movie starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson followed the hugely popular book, which probably 95% of women and several men have read. (The sequels are worth checking out, too.)

3. "Just Like Heaven"

- My husband and I both enjoyed this charming, 2005 romantic comedy starring Mark Ruffalo and Reese Witherspoon. Ruffalo plays a lonely bachelor annoyed by Witherspoon's ghostly presence, until he comes to welcome her companionship and fall in love with her.

4. "Return to Me"

(2000) - Minnie Driver and David Duchovny are endearing in this sweet tale of loss and new-found love. Spoiler alert: The fact the dude's two loves actually share a heart is romantic andslightly morbid - sure to appeal to both sides of any married couple.

5. "The Phantom of the Opera"

(2004) - This one just might involve singing and a man or two in tights. But its chilling storyline and gorgeous musical score are sure to enthrall anyone with any taste whatsoever, man or woman alike! Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum star.

I know I am speaking in big generalizations here. Most gals are into the superhero/action/death and destruction stuff as well as more feminine fare.

If you're a fan of musicals and romantic comedies and happen to be male, no worries. You're a step ahead. But for the erstwhile hubby, perhaps you could check out one of these options in movie rentals for your next in-house date night. Your wife is sure to appreciate the gesture!
