Some days you just need a quick pick me up. You're not depressed nor angry, just feeling a bit down. Here are some simple ways to cheer yourself up on those down days.

1. Eat an ice cream cone

There is something heartwarming about eating an ice cream cone. Not eating out of a bowl, but rather eating it one lick at a time. Get your favorite flavor and take it slow as you enjoy your cone full of fun.

2. Laugh

When was the last time you really laughed? Not a small chuckle out of politeness, but a true full-body-can't-breathe all out laugh? It is the best feeling in the world. Find something or someone to make you laugh.

3. Listen to music

Music can have a powerful influence on our moods. It can make us feel melancholy, happy, sad and inspired. If you're down, there is no better way to lift your spirits than putting on some uplifting music.

4. Spend time with a friend

Hopefully we all have at least one friend we can turn to when we're feeling down. The kind of friend who knows just what to say to make you smile. The one who can help you forget your worries if only for a moment and make you feel better. Find that friend and spend a few minutes with her.

5. Walk in the sunshine

Walking in the sun can be balm to the soul. Feeling the warmth of its rays on your skin can warm your spirit. Breathe in the air, let your muscles stretch as you walk, while your mind soaks in the sun. I'm sure you'll feel better.

6. Watch your favorite movie

Since I was young I have always had a movie that no matter what mood I'm in when I watch it, I feel better when it is over. For me, it is the cute romantic comedy Only You. Find the movie that you can watch to make you smile.

7. Cuddle

Whether it is with your significant other, your child or your teddy bear, take a few moments to cuddle someone you love. Hugs can take away your pain, lift your spirit and just make you feel better.

8. Blow bubbles with gum

As kids, we only got to chew gum on airplanes; something about it helping your ears pop. So the few times we got to chew gum we would pick some crazy sugary flavor that was known for making the best bubbles and spent most of the plane ride doing just that - blowing bubbles.

Now that I'm older, and can chew gum any time I want, there is still something special about trying to blow the biggest bubble possible before it pops all over your face. It always lifts my spirits just a bit.

9. Dance

In our house, we love to dance. Everyone from my husband down to my son can get their groove on. When we are getting ready to go out my husband finds the best music to play and we dance while getting dressed, putting on makeup and gathering our things. It sets the mood as fun, joyful and ready for anything. Try it. It is hard to stay down when you are shaking your hips to Shakira.

10. Swing

I loved to swing when I was a kid. There was something so freeing about sitting on a swing and soaring high into the sky. That feeling of leaning back while you fall always brought a smile to my face. Even though I am no longer a kid, I am not too old for swinging. It is hard not imagining I am a child again without a care in the world when I sit on a swing.

11. Love on your pet

Animals are known for prolonging life, relieving stress and bringing us joy. If you are feeling low, pet your dog or cat. It will instantly lift your spirits. Their happy demeanor and unconditional love will shine through and take your blues away.

12. Smile

When all else fails, smiling is the fastest way to lift your spirit. It is hard to stay down when you have a genuine smile on your face. To make the effort even more effective, try smiling at someone. Not only will it brighten your day, but theirs as well.

Sometimes all it takes is a simple act to bring happiness back to your soul. I hope sadness does not creep into your life too often, but if it does hopefully one or more of these tips can brighten your day.
