After a long day of work, errands and responsibilities, you're finally reunited with your sweetheart. Typically, you ask them how their day was. And just as typically, they say "good." That's that, and you move on to other subjects, like what's for dinner, where the kids are and what's new on Netflix.

How about shaking things up just a little? While you still want to know about your honey's day, you can ask another question that doesn't just require a one-word answer.

Here are 13 questions to ask your spouse besides "how was your day?":

1. What was the best part of your day?

I love this question because it makes you really think. If you had an amazing day, it's hard to choose the best part. It's even harder if you've had an awful day. But even then, there's something good about finding joy in the everyday ... plus it's a great conversation starter.

2. Did you take any photos today?

Whether they took a few selfies because their hair looked fabulous or you snapped a few pictures of the kids playing at the park, it's a sweet way to actually see into your spouse's day.

3. Who made you feel loved today?

Maybe it was your neighbor, your child or even your dog. Whoever it is, it's nice talking about it with your spouse.

4. What's the most interesting conversation you've had today?

Maybe your answer will be "this one", or the random chat they had with a coworker about a favorite vacation destination. Whatever it is, it's a fun way to share a laugh or two together.

5. What was the worst part of your day?

Sometimes your spouse might not want to relive the bad parts of their day, so you can give them a pass if they're not open to answering this question. But if they are, you'll be able to come together and comfort each other.

6. If today were a song, which one would it be?

This is even more fun if you two share a favorite band or artist. If that's the case, you can get specific and ask, "if today were a Michael Buble song, which one would it be?"

7. What made you laugh today?

Thinking of all the funny things throughout their day is bound to make your sweetheart feel good. Maybe the cat got into the peanut butter or maybe they saw a hilarious meme on Facebook. Whatever it is, funny moments are bound to spark a little conversation.

8. What was frustrating about your day?

This is another great way to open the doors to some good, deep conversation. You two should be comfortable venting to each other, and this is a simple way to bring it up before anyone gets too stressed to think or speak clearly.

9. What did you do today that you're most proud of?

Sometimes my biggest accomplishment in a day is managing to roll out of bed. Whether it's something silly like that or something more significant, you should be able to brag a little bit to your spouse.

10. Who did you miss today?

My best friend asked me this once upon a time, and it totally caught me off guard. After thinking about it for a minute, I responded, "my mom." Maybe your spouse misses their mom, maybe they missed you. If it's someone they can call, encourage them to pick up the phone and reconnect.

11. Did you listen to anything interesting today?

Maybe they overheard an interesting conversation while out to lunch with friends, or maybe you listened to a fascinating podcast you'd like to share with them. Or maybe it was just a really weird song on the radio.

12. What will you remember about today five years from now?

Try to take an imaginary snapshot of at least one moment every single day. Make every single day worth remembering, and share those experiences with your love.

13. How can I make your day better?

At the end of a long day, you two should be able to come together to love and support each other. If you're willing to help them out, they'll be willing to help you out as well. Life is always a little better when you have someone who wants to make your day better.

When you ask your spouse questions like these, you're sure to strike up a great conversation, instead of simple one-word answers.
