Everyone has times in their life where they feel like they're unworthy of God's love. But this idea that you are impossible to love is an absolute lie.

These kind of lies have the power to inhibit our progress. While God does allow us to feel guilt as a consequence of our actions to teach us what we need to improve, it's essential that we evaluate these thoughts to make sure they are teaching us to progress instead of turning us away from God.

My weaknesses make me unlovable

Sometimes we look at ourselves and think our mistakes, weaknesses and shortcomings make us someone that doesn't deserve love. At these times it can feel impossible that someone as perfect as God could love us. However, God sees you as His child and He loves you without any conditions on His love. At times, we may even think that we have to earn God's love by being perfect, but He loves us now, no matter how far away we are from perfection.

Religious leader Bonnie Parkin said, "Do we frequently reject the Lord's love that He pours out upon us in much more abundance than we are willing to receive? Do we think we have to be perfect in order to deserve His love? When we allow ourselves to feel 'encircled about eternally in the arms of his love,' we feel safe, and we realize that we don't need to be immediately perfect."

Allow yourself to feel God's love even if you don't feel like you deserve it; God knows that you do.

God must not love me because He allows terrible things to happen to me

It can be hard to understand why awful things happen to good people. It seems unfair that tragedies would occur when you are trying so hard to be good. Again, comparison can even have a damaging effect in this situation as we see others who seem to have a life free of the misfortunes that torment us.

Pope Francis said, "Remember always that God does not forget any of His children, and those that are the smallest and who suffer the most are closest to his heart." He does not forget you in your pain. If you turn to him, he will support you and help alieviate your heartache.

I'm not good enough because I keep making the same mistakes

The Bible teaches us, "The Lord seeth not as man seeth for... the Lord looketh on the heart" (1 Samuel 16:7). God knows the desires of your heart. He can see that you have the desire to be better and that matters to Him. It's because we make mistakes that Jesus suffered for us. He loves you. Let Him heal you of your mistakes. His grace is the enabling power that allows you to become better. When you don't believe you can improve, you are denying Jesus's power. Have faith and hope. He believes you can overcome your weaknesses. That's why He suffered for you.

Because I'm not as good as someone else, I'm not valuable

God uses examples to teach us to be better. On the other hand, the counterfeit of good examples is unjust comparison. At times we may even start to compare our weaknesses to someone else's strengths.

But God does not compare His children to each other; He only compares us to our past selves (But even if we aren't better than who we were, He continues to love us.)

Religious leader Jeffery R. Holland stated, "I testify that no one of us is less treasured or cherished of God than another. I testify that He loves each of us-insecurities, anxieties, self-image, and all. He doesn't measure our talents or our looks; He doesn't measure our professions or our possessions. He cheers on every runner, calling out that the race is against sin, not against each other."

God would never compare you to someone else, so you shouldn't either.

What I've done is too terrible to be forgiven

Again, believing that your weaknesses are beyond God's reach is denying His power. Remember the story of the woman who was taken to Jesus to be punished for committing adultry. Rather than stoning her or even reprimanding her, Jesus just invited her to "go and sin no more" (John 18:11). Jesus loves us and offers forgiveness to those who are repentant. 1 John 1:9 says "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." This is a promise God has made to us. He is perfect and is perfect in keeping His promises. Your sin is not beyond His power. He loves you and looks forward to welcoming you back.

Bible teacher Jennifer Rothschild said, "God didn't choose to love you because you were lovely. He loved you and then you became lovely." When you feel like it's impossible for God to love you, that's when you need his love the most. Your weaknesses, shortcomings, and mistakes are what can make you humble enough to turn to God and feel his love. Let your weaknesses turn you to God, the healer who loves you unconditionally.
