When you are shy, you may feel like you have a large obstacle to overcome. Shyness can be a weakness. It can create unwanted and unnecessary limitations and prevent you from reaching your full potential. July 26 is National Talk In an Elevator Day. This day is designed to help you step out of your comfort zone and talk to a stranger, whether it be in an elevator, in the store or on the street. But for some, this is easier said than done. Here are several ways you can overcome your shyness and become a more outgoing individual.

Watch your body language

Your body language says more about you than you may realize. When you are in an uncomfortable situation, you often close off your body by folding your arms, avoiding eye contact or becoming fidgety. When you close off your body, others recognize it. They are less apt to come toward you and strike up a conversation.

When you are in an awkward or uncomfortable situation, pay close attention to your body language. Try to make eye contact with individuals. Be relaxed and welcoming. Others will be more likely to make their way in your direction, and you will have more opportunities to get to know others.

Start one step at a time

You can't expect to become an outgoing individual overnight. It will take time before you build the self-confidence you need to completely overcome your shy nature. Take the process one step at a time. Make a goal to place yourself in a new situation each day. Whether it means talking to someone new, hosting a party or attending some type of social event, do something you wouldn't normally do. As you step out more and more, you will find it becomes much easier. You may find yourself doing surprising things.

Avoid the comparisons

Unfortunately, we often compare ourselves to others. We look at their strengths and compare them to our weaknesses. These comparisons usually result in lower self-confidence and self-esteem. These two characteristics are crucial to overcoming shyness. When we feel good about ourselves and know we have something to offer, we are more willing to branch out. We are more willing to get to know others and speak out. Don't compare yourself to others. You are a unique person. You have unique traits and characteristics that nobody else has.

Volunteer

Volunteer work is one of the best remedies for shyness. It forces you to work with a variety of individuals. It also forces you into new situations that you would normally avoid. Plus, service is an excellent way to feel good about yourself and build your self-confidence. By applying yourself and making yourself useful to different individuals, you will find that you can do anything.

Being shy doesn't have to be an obstacle you deal with your entire life. You can overcome this challenge by applying a few of the above suggestions into your everyday life. And since today is Talk In An Elevator Day, make it a goal to talk to someone new. The hardest part is to just get started.
