What makes a person beautiful? Their clothes? Makeup? Hairstyles? Or does it come from somewhere deep inside a person?

This video features children talking about what makes people beautiful. Their answers have nothing to do with physical features or enhancements. Here are a few of their responses:

  • "Somebody's beautiful when they like someone."

  • "They act like their selves."

  • "Somebody's beautiful when they're being nice and funny."

All the children agreed that their mothers are the most beautiful people in the world.

The kids, ranging from 4 to 9 years old, got to do their moms' makeup. The result? Well...the kids had fun and the moms were really good sports. The kids remarked that their moms looked "cool" or "like a rock star."

Even though the makeovers weren't necessarily works of art, the mothers are still beautiful. The moms shared these thoughts on beauty - things they would like their children to understand:

  • Beauty is being different. Regardless of size, shape or looks, we can all be beautiful. Beauty is more about how we feel about who we are and what we do.

  • Beauty comes from within and all the rest is "surface." It's what is inside that really counts.

  • "There are more important things than physical beauty. The most important thing is that you feel beautiful inside - and that you wear a lot of glitter."

We should teach our children how to recognize their inner beauty. While we may not be able to control what our bodies look like, we can decide how kind we are, how we treat others, whether we will make good choices or how we think and feel. Ultimately, those choices are what make us beautiful.
