When dry shampoo first came out on the market, it was an instant hit. It meant that you didn't have to shower. It gave your hair body, texture and volume. It promised no more greasy roots.

Unfortunately, this wasn't a miracle cure for geasy hair — there are actually some terrible side effects of dry shampoo.

You get to decide if these seven are worth it to you:

1. Scalp pimples

If you didn't wash your face for two weeks, you can imagine how bad your facial acne would be. Well, your scalp is similar. When you don't shower and clean out your pores, the buildup of dry shampoo can clog your skin. In addition to the dry shampoo, other things are building up — your daily skin cells, more grease, hairspray, etc. With all this dirty accumulation, your scalp has no choice but to erupt in pimples.

2. Dandruff

Because your hair doesn't have a chance to get clean, skin cells build up and cause dandruff. This side effect is made even worse by the fact that dry shampoo absorbs all the oil in your hair, which further dries out your scalp and causes dandruff.

3. Dullness

As mentioned, dry shampoo absorbs your hair's oil, which takes away the shine. Your hair can look dusty and dull. This is especially prevalent in people with darker hair. The light-colored shampoo can be seen most easily on people with dark brown or black hair, especially if you put in too much powder.

4. Split ends

As the dry shampoo absorbs the oil, your hair can become dry and damaged. Thus, breakage and split ends are common side effects of dry shampoo.

5. Hair loss

If your hair gets too damaged, it can break off entirely. In some cases, the follicle will even die. The harsh chemicals in dry shampoo can inhibit the growth of new hairs, too.

6. Flat hair

Dry shampoo is supposed to give you more volume. At first, that may be the case. But as the day wears on, the extra weight can drag your hair down. Your hair may get even flatter as it gets more damaged, because the broken hair doesn't hold teasing or ratting as well as healthy hair does.

7. Itchy, bleeding patches

Dry shampoo makes your hair more rough, so you get more tangles. Constantly fighting tangles as you brush can result in scratching your scalp, which may already be suffering from the other detrimental effects of overdrying and dandruff. This roughness on your skin can cause irritation and itching. If you don't take care of it, your scalp can feel sore and start to bleed.
