Many stars in Hollywood go through breakups, and often times go through custody battles over their pets. Cheryl Burke, Johnny Depp and Andrew Shue are just a few celebrities that are going through the custody battle with their pets and splitting time with their furry friends even after their split. Holly David, a family law attorney who has a history of high net worth divorce cases explained how the situation works to Fox News Digital by saying, "Dogs are not humans, and in legal terms, they are essentially considered property. They are sometimes even assigned a property value, and are placed on the divorce asset spreadsheet as part of the list of the inventory of the estate that is divided upon divorce.  But in application, judges and lawyers understand that dogs are much more than property, and in some cases, divorcing couples are willing to spend tens of thousands of dollars litigating who gets the dog in the divorce, and Courts will let them."

Cheryl Burke and ex-husband Matthew Lawrence are one of the celebrity couples dealing with a custody battle over their French Bulldog, Ysabell. Although the pair finalized their divorce in September, it took until this January to end the battle with Burke getting full custody of the dog. She took to Instagram to announce this by saying, "Officially a FULL TIME dog mom… 2023, we're off to a great start!"

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard are another couple that recently dealt with a custody battle over their pets after their very public divorce. Among Depp's lawsuit against Heard for defamation, they also were battling for custody over their two dogs, Pistol and Boo. According to Entertainment Tonight, Heard was able to keep her dog, Pistol, who was a gift from a previous ex, and is said to likely gain custody over Boo, which was originally Depp's dog, but he reportedly does not want the dogs to be split up.

Most recently, Andrew Shue and Amy Robach were seen in the streets of New York City handing off their pup, Brody, after allegations went public of Robach's "GMA3" co-anchor, T.J. Holmes. There is no confirmation over who will gain custody of their dog yet.
